Oracle’s VirtualBox + Windows 8 Consumer Preview + Visual Studio 11 Ultimate Beta = FAIL? (Updated with a fix!)

Hello all,

i’ve been trying to set up the title’s combo with no success so far. Everything works real smooth until trying to fire up Visual Studio’s installer. I get the gray “Visual Studio 11 Beta”-splash screen and then FAIL with:

Visual Studio Fail
Visual Studio 11 stopped working

“Stopped working”, i’m sad. There are two rows in Event Viewer’s Application Log related to this:

1) Error from .NET Runtime

Application: vs_ultimate.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: exception code c0000005, exception address 1000A05E

2) Application Error

I believe that the latter one includes the key to this problem – namely “VBoxDispD3D-x86.dll”, which is the Direct 3D -driver used by VirtualBox. I’ll be working into that direction – maybe there’s something there, maybe not. We’ll see…

If anyone’s had any success making this work, i’d be really happy to hear about it!

UPDATE 2012-03-02:

Most humble thanks to JP Gervasoni for commenting! Problem’s gone and the fix was quite obvious: Simply uninstall VirtualBox’s Guest Additions from guest-OS and enjoy VS11 on W8CP!

  1. hello, i guess you were right. I’ve just uninstalled Virtual Box Guest Additions and i’m able to launch install.

    1. Thanks, i’ll try that a bit later today! I really don’t know how i missed that option last night. I even created a new VM with more disk space etc., but “naturally” installed the Guest Additions before trying VS-installation…

  2. Got the same problem on VMWare Workstation 8. With or without guest additions, it always fails to install.

Guess I’ll just have to run it on bare-metal …
